Manfred SCHUTTENGRUBER (AUT).VILNIUS, Oct 14, (Reuters) - Valdas Ivanauskas scored a hat-trick on Wednesday night as
Lithuania beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-2 in a Group 9 European Championships qualifying
match.
Bosnian defender Muchamed Konjic scored direct from a corner early on, but Ivanauskas
scored his first goal five minutes later with a well-struck free- kick from 18 meters out.
Ivanauskas netted his second goal after 68 minutes but Bosnian striker Elvir Baljic
levelled within a minute before being sent off for a tackle from behind just two minutes
later.
Ivanauskas completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute and substitute Virgilius
Baltushnikas increased hosts' lead in the final minute.
Lithuania now have five points in the group from two draws and a win, while Bosnia
suffered their second defeat against a win and a draw.
ECQ: LITHUANIA - FAROE ISLANDS 0:0
10.10.1998 20:00. Vilnius Zalgiris stadium. Att. 1500. Rf.
Charles SCHAACK (LUX).VILNIUS, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Lithuania's goal drought continued on Saturday as they
missed a chance to gain ground in European championship qualifying group nine with a 0-0
draw against the Faroe Islands.
After conceding seven goals without reply in their first three games, the Faroe Islands
appeared an easy way for Lithuania to get on the scoresheet after a scoreless draw with
Scotland in their opener.
But although Lithuania dominated from the outset, they failed to find the mark time and
again as a steady downpour made footing tricky and slowed play considerably.
The Faroe Islands tried to counter-attack more in the second half but could not generate
any quality scoring chances.
Lithuania now have two draws to show in their group, while the Faroe Islands have one
point from four matches.

Lithuania hold Scotland to 0-0 draw
VILNIUS, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Lithuania and Scotland battled to a 0-0 draw in their European
group nine qualifying match on Saturday in an evenly matched game with few scoring
opportunities.
Lithuania took the initiative early on when Edgaras Jankauskas forced Scotland goalkeeper
Jim Leighton into a diving save with a 22nd minute header. Lithuania threatened again with
their best scoring opportunity in the 45th minute when Aidas Preiksaitis fired a shot from
outside the penalty box, shaving the post.
Scotland's best chance came three minutes into time added on when central defender Colin
Hendry headed over the bar.
Underdogs Lithuania were pleased with their showing despite failing to score. "It was
our first game of the new cycle and it was like
a student exam...and I think the result was not bad," Lithuanian coach Kestutis
Latoza said.
Scottish manager Craig Brown praised the Lithuania side and said his strikers had
difficulty getting the ball for most of the game.
"We played Norway, who are rated number 10 in the world, in the World Cup and I think
we had an easier game against them than we had today," Brown told
reporters.

Soccer-Lacklustre Chile score last-gasp win over Lithuania:
Lacklustre Chile needed a last-minute goal by Claudio Nunez to overcome Lithuania 1-0
in a World Cup warm-up match on Wednesday.
Nunez scored following a 90th minute corner but his late strike was not enough to spare
Chile, who have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1982, from being
jeered off by a sparse 7,000 crowd. Lithuania have not qualified for France.
Chile, without foreign-based strikers Ivan Zamorano and Marcelo Salas and playmaker Jose
Luis Sierra, used the match to test some less experienced players.
Chile created two good chances in the first half, the first a free kick from right-back
Pablo Galdamez which flew narrowly wide and the second a shot by Mauricio Aros which
struck the post.
After the break, they were restricted to a few fairly harmless long-range efforts until
Nunez's late goal.
